Army Life in a Black Regiment

Published May 20, 2008

LibriVox recording of Army Life in a Black Regiment, by Thomas Wentworth Higginson. Read by FNH.

These pages record some of the adventures of the First South Carolina Volunteers, the first slave regiment mustered into the service of the United States during the late civil war. It was, indeed, the first colored regiment of any kind so mustered, except a portion of the troops raised by Major-General Butler at New Orleans. These scarcely belonged to the same class, however, being recruited from the free colored population of that city, a comparatively self-reliant and educated race. (From the text)

". I WISH A WHITE SYMPATHISER WOULD GET ONE OF THESE BIG WIGS....BECAUSE THEY STILL EXIST THESE DAYS....BLACKEN THEIR SKIN AND WALK THEM THROUGH THOSE PARTS WHERE PEOPLE ARE PREJUDICED AND SEE HOW THEY FEEL. I AM WHITE BY BIRTH, BUT FEEL FOR THOSE NOT BEING THAT FORTUNATE AND HAVE HAD TO SUFFER."

And I wish I could grab you and drop you off one balmy evening in some nice black neighborhoods, like some of those I know all too well, in say Brooklyn, NY, so you can tell everybody there about how much you love them and how much you hate white people. I could stop by the next morning and pick up what's left of your precious snowflake remains - your gizzard and some chicken bones - and deliver it to your next of kin.

I FOUND THIS BOOK MOST INTERESTING, SO MANY PEOPLE ARE NOT AWARE OF THE CRUELTY SOME GOVERNMENTS CAN INFLICT ON INNOCENT PEOPLE. I AM WHITE BY BIRTH, BUT FEEL FOR THOSE NOT BEING THAT FORTUNATE AND HAVE HAD TO SUFFER.
